Yet attention involves more than interest or motivation. The ability to focus, sustain effort, manage distractions, and remain engaged through complexity depends on the brain’s capacity to process information, regulate competing demands, and maintain cognitive effort.
Attention is not just something the environment captures: it is not something we find or lose. It is determined, controlled, and shaped by cognitive processes in the brain.

After working with schools and students for nearly five decades, our data suggests that more often than not—inattention is not due to poor instruction nor a lack of intelligence or effort, but because the cognitive systems that shape attention are not operating efficiently.
Attention is not a single skill. It relies on a network of cognitive functions working together.
To engage deeply in learning, the brain must:

These behaviors are often interpreted as a lack of motivation. In some cases they are diagnosed as ADHD or executive function issues. More recently, social media and digital distractions are named culprits. Ultimately, these behaviours reflect inefficient cognitive processes struggling to keep up with the task or environment. When a student's cognitive profile is not equipped—inattention, distraction, or even a sense of helplessness—is often the first 'symptom.'
Attention and the Future of Learning in an AI World
The role of attention is becoming increasingly significant as technology transforms how people interact with information. There is much discussion about it's impact and influence in education.
Artificial intelligence can now retrieve knowledge, generate content, summarize ideas, and support problem-solving in ways that were once unimaginable. As access to information becomes easier, the uniquely human challenge is no longer simply finding information — it is knowing what to do with it.
Students will need to evaluate information critically, recognize patterns, ask meaningful questions, make connections, exercise judgment, and develop original ideas. These abilities cannot be outsourced. They require a learner who can engage deeply, think flexibly, and sustain attention through complexity.
AI can provide answers. But learners still need the cognitive capacity to determine which questions matter, whether an answer is meaningful, and how knowledge can be applied.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education, one of the most important conversations is how these tools can support students who struggle with learning. AI has the potential to provide personalized explanations, adapt instruction, offer feedback, and increase access to information.
But are we helping students become stronger learners, or are we simply making it easier to complete learning tasks?
For students who experience learning difficulties, there is a risk that AI becomes another layer of compensation — a tool that helps students bypass the very cognitive processes they need opportunities to develop.
But learning isn't producing a correct answer, completing an assignment, or accessing information. Equipping students for a life of independence means preparing them to sustain their attention, hold and manipulate information, reason through complexity, recognize patterns, make connections, and persist through challenge. These cognitive processes are not obstacles to learning. They are the foundation of learning.
When technology is used primarily to reduce cognitive demands, we are limiting opportunities for students to strengthen their own thinking and independence. A student who relies on a tool to generate, summarize, or organize information may complete a task more easily.. but they are short-circuiting their opportunity to think and learn.
The purpose of education has never been simply to help students complete today’s tasks. It is to develop their ability to approach tomorrow’s challenges.
Building the Capacity to Learn
Education has long focused on how to capture students’ attention — through engaging lessons, meaningful content, supportive environments, and now, emerging technologies. But attention cannot only be captured. It must also be developed.
Amidst conversations about AI, personalized learning, and accessibility, the learner’s brain must remain central. Students need opportunities not only to access information but also to develop the cognitive capacities required to direct their attention, think critically, manage complexity, and engage deeply with the world around them.
The greatest opportunity in education is not simply finding new ways to support learners when learning becomes difficult. It is strengthening the abilities that make learning possible.
The future of education is not a choice between human learning and artificial intelligence. It is about ensuring that every learner has the cognitive foundation to engage with, evaluate, and benefit from the powerful tools that are emerging.
