No two people think, learn, or experience the world in exactly the same way. One reason is that no two brains have exactly the same pattern of cognitive strengths and challenges.
We often talk about people as if they have a single level of ability: good at math, a strong reader, easily distracted, great with people, or a slow learner. But these descriptions can hide something much more interesting—and much more useful.
Our abilities are built from many different cognitive functions, and each of those functions can operate at a different level of capacity.
A cognitive function is the specialized work performed by a particular region or network of the brain. Recognizing an object, remembering information, making sense of relationships, solving a problem, processing symbols, sustaining attention, and interpreting nonverbal information all depend on different cognitive functions. These functions work together constantly, creating the complex mental processes that allow us to learn, work, communicate, and navigate everyday life.
Your brain is not simply “strong” or "weak."
Each cognitive function operates along a continuum of capacity. You may have exceptional capacity in one function, average capacity in another, and experience more difficulty with a third.
That means two people can arrive at the same outcome for very different cognitive reasons. For example, one person might grasp the relationships between ideas almost immediately but find it difficult to remember detailed instructions. Another might have an excellent memory for information but need more time to see the connections between concepts. Someone else might be highly capable of solving verbal problems but find social situations harder to interpret.
These aren't contradictions. They are different cognitive profiles.

Complex activities don't depend on a single cognitive function. They require multiple functions to work together. If one function is particularly strong, it may support performance in an important way. If another is less efficient, it may make certain tasks require more time, effort, or conscious attention.
And because everyone's combination is different, there is no single cognitive profile that defines what a capable learner, thinker, or person looks like.
Why this matters for learning
This perspective changes the question we ask when someone is struggling.
Diagnoses for learning difficulties and disabilities can be important for access, but we can also examine the cognitive processes that tasks require and measure efficiently those processes working together.
Consider reading. Reading isn't one ability. It draws on multiple cognitive processes, including the ability to recognize and process symbols, remember information, sustain attention, make connections, and derive meaning.
The same is true of mathematics, writing, planning, following instructions, participating in a conversation, or learning something new.
When we understand learning through the lens of cognitive functions, a difficulty with a particular task doesn't necessarily tell us everything about a person's capacity to learn. It may give us a clue about the underlying cognitive processes involved.
Our differences are more than labels
Labels can be useful for describing patterns of difficulty, but they don't capture the full complexity of an individual brain.
A diagnostic label might tell us what someone is experiencing. A cognitive profile can help us think more specifically about why certain tasks may be easier or harder for that person.
And this matters because understanding the brain behind learning opens up a different way of thinking about possibility.

Our cognitive profile helps explain where we are today. Neuroplasticity gives us proof it doesn't have to define where we are tomorrow.
